يعتبر تحليل التغاير من الوسائل المهمة في تخليص التجربة من تاثير بعض العوامل المستقلة قبل إجراء التجربة .
تقارن التباينات الناتجة عن الفرق بين المعالجات وتباين حد الخطأ فإذا كانت بقدره أو اصغر منه اعتبرت غير معنوية ولا يوجد فرق بين المسببات لها، إما إذا كانت اكبر منه اعتبرت التباينات معنوية وعندئذ يصار إلى مرحلة جديدة وهي بيان المسبب الأكبر للتباين المعنوي من المعالجات في التجربة وهنالك طرق كثيرة لذلك كطريقة (الفرق المعنوي الأصغر least significant difference) ،
و (طريقة Duncan) و (طريقة Tukey –) وكذلك (طريقة student – New men) .
